LONDON : Moments after England handed South Africa, 4 – 0 drubbing, it was the turn of skipper Graeme Smith to look into the reasons which he came out with. Smith, held responsible his inexperienced bowlers for the crushing defeat in the ODI series against England, but also hoped that his team would bounce back soon. Smith also pointed that ‘Polly’s void was yet to be filled.’
Shaun Pollock’s services with the bat or bowl provided Proteas that extra cushion in shuffling the number six position with a batsman or bowler. "Replacing a guy like Shaun who provided so much control in our one-day [game] was never going to happen quickly. His all-round abilities meant so much: his tight bowling, lengthening our batting, finishing off games. Some of the young guys in the one-day set-up are struggling with form; it`s created a bit of pressure on the team," Smith said to a cricket website.
A disappointed Smith also reminded media of their success in Test series following which England former Test skipper Michael Vaughan had to resign. "Some people have pretty short-term memories and of course we`d like them to remember exactly what we did achieve in the Test series. Obviously what has happened subsequently is disappointing,” Smith added.
Smith also made it clear that his next ODI challenge would be series against Australia.
