General Note about Examination Scheme
The examination shall be conducted according to the following plan:
Part I : Written examination in the subjects as set out below.
Part II : Interview for personality test of such candidates called by the Commission, carrying a maximum of 200 marks.
Examination Subjects: The following will be the subjects of Written Examination:
1. General English
Duration - 2 hrs
Marks - 100 Marks
2. Geology Paper I
Subjects - Comprising of General Geology, Geomorphology, Structural Geology, Stratigraphy and Palaentology
Duration - 3hrs
Marks - 200 marks
3. Geology Paper II
Subjects - Comprising of Crystallography, Mineralogy, Petrology and Geo-chemistry
Duration - 3hrs
Marks - 200 marks
4. Geology Paper III
Subjects - Comprising of Indian Mineral Deposits, Mineral Exploration, Mineral Economics and Economic Geology
Duration - 3 hrs
Marks - 200 marks
5. Hydrogeology
Duration - 3 hrs
Marks - 200 marks
Optional Subjects and Syllabus
The standard of the paper in General English will be such as may be expected of a Science Graduate. The papers on geological subjects will be approximately of the MSc Degree standard of an Indian university and questions will generally be set to test the candidate's grasp of the fundamentals in each subject.
There will be no practical examination in any of the subjects.
1. GENERAL ENGLISH : Questions to test the understanding of and the power to write English.
2. GEOLOGY PAPER I : General Geology, Geomorphology, Structural Geology, Stratigraphy, Palaeontology.
3. GEOLOGY PAPER II : Crystallography, Descriptive Mineralogy, Optical Mineralogy, Petrology. (i) Igneous, (ii) Sedimentary, (iii) Metamorphic, Geo-chemistry.
4. GEOLOGY PAPER III : Indian Mineral Deposits, Mineral exploration, Mineral Economics, Economic Geology.
5. Hydrogeology
Other Information Regarding Plan of Examination :
Candidates competing for posts under both Category I and category II will be
required to offer all the five subjects mentioned above. Candidates competing for posts under Category I only will be required to offer subjects at (I) to (4) above and candidates competing for posts under Category II only will be required to offer subjects at (1) to (3) and (5) above.
The examination in all the subjects will be completely of conventional (essay) type.
