Basic Information regarding Exam
The Indian Statistical Service Examination is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to Grade IV of the Indian Statistical Service. This examination is held once a year generally in the month of December.

Age limit
A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the first day of January of the year in which the examination is held. The upper age limit ay be relaxed in respect of the SC/ST and certain other categories.

Minimum Educational Qualification
A candidate for the Indian Statistical Service must have obtained a degree with Statistics/Applied Statistics/Mathematics from any University or possess an equivalent qualification.

Examination Fee
Rs.100/- (No fee for SC/ST candidates).

General Note about Examination Scheme
The examination comprises: (i) Written examination (1000 marks) in subjects given below; (ii) Vivavoce (200 marks) of such candidates as may be called by the Commission.

The question papers in all the subjects will be of Conventional (Essay) Type.

5. Statistics III
6. Statistics IV

Standard of Papers
The standard of papers in General English and General Studies will be such as may be expected of a Graduate of an Indian University. The standard of papers in the other subjects will be that of the Master's Degree examination of an Indian University in the relevant disciplines. The candidates will be expected to illustrate theory by facts, and to analyse problems with the help of theory. They will be expected to be particularly conversant with Indian problems in the fields of Statistics.

VIVA VOCE
The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of competent and unbiased observers who will have before them a record of his career. The object of the interview is to assess his suitability for the Service or Services for which he has competed. The Interview is intended to supplement the Written Examination for testing the general and specialised knowledge and abilities of the candidate. The candidate will be expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in his subjects of academic study but also in events which are happening around him both within and outside his own State or country, a3 well as in modern currents of thoughts and in new discoveries which should rouse the curiosity of well-educated youth.

The technique of the Interview is not that of a strict cross examination, but fo a natural, though directed and purposive conversation, intended to reveal the candidate's ment1l1qualities and his grasp ofprobleins.The Board willpay special attention to assessing the intellectual curiosity, critical powers of assimilation. balance of judgement and alertness of mind, the ability for social cohesion, integrity of character; initiative and capacity for leadership.

How to Apply
Notice for examination is published usually in August in Leading Newspapers/Employment News. The Application Form along with Information Brochure must be obtained fro..m the designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices throughout the country as listed in the notification published in Employment News/ Leading Newspapers against cash payment of Rs 20. Candidates must use the form supplied with the Information Brochure only and they should in no case use photocopy/reproduction/unauthorisedly printed copy of the Form.

LAST DATE
