The Institute of Rail Transport (IRT) conducts every year 1 year Diploma Courses in :

A) Rail Transport and Management : The Ministry of Railways have recognised this Diploma as an additional desirable qualification for recruitment to the Category of Assistant Station Masters, Traffic/Commercial Apprentices and Supervisory grades in the Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Signal Engineering Departments.

This course is also very useful to Railway Employees and Employees of Trade Industry and Government connected with Railways such as Steel and Coal, Port Trust, Food, Fertilizer, POL, Cement, Non-ferrous Metal Industries and Export, etc.

B) Transport Economics and Management : The Ministry of Railways have recognised this Diploma as an additional desirable qualification for recruitment to posts in the Commercial (including Marketing), Operating, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments. This course is also likely to benefit fresh University Graduates desiring specialisation in Transport Economics and Management and seeking employment opportunities in the related fields and those who are already working in any Organisation/Ministries dealing with Transportation and desiring to upgrade their knowledge, etc., to improve their prospects in their respective Ministries and Enterprises.

COURSE FEE
Rs 650/- (Rs 1800/- for Course B) for correspondence course without contact classes and Rs 1000/- (Rs 2600/- for Course B) with contact classes at selected Centres. The fee is payable at the time of enrolment.

COURSE CONTENTS (FOR COURSE A ONLY) : The Course consists of 63 lessons in 11 subjects consisting of Transport Economics, Management Concepts, Material Management, Financial, Commercial, Operating Management, Civil, Signal and Tele-communication, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Printed lessons are supplied by post. Course material is available both in English and Hindi.

C) Multi-modal Transport (Containerisation) and Logistics Management : This course is recognised by the Ministry of Railways as an additional desirable qualification for recruitment to posts in the Commercial (including Marketing), Operating, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments. This course gives an unique opportunity to Managers and Staff and candidates seeking employment in all transport organisations, rail, road, sea, air, ports and also allied Institutions like Banking, Insurance, Warehousing, Freight Forwarders, Customs, Customs House Agents, Shipping lines, Shipping Agents to make themselves familiar with the latest developments in Inter-modal transport and containerisation.

COURSE FEE : The course fee is Rs 1800/- for the correspondence course without contact classes and Rs 2600/- with contact classes at selected centres. The fee is payable at the time of enrolment.

D) Railway Engineering : Approved by Railway Board, this course will also be very useful to serving railway employees as well as employees working in public/ private sector connected with railways such as RITES, IRCON, DMRC, Railway Sidings, Port Trust, Cement Industry, Fertilizers, firms engaged in construction of railway works as well as manufacturers of track components and ,allied railway products.

E) Port-Development & Management (2 years) : This course given a unique opportunity to those who wish to join the Port Sector. It will also be of use to newly recruited executives in the Port Sector.

COURSE FEE : The course fee is Rs 5000/- for the correspondence course without contact classes and Rs. 6000/- with contact classes. Study material is available in English only.

Minimum Educational Qualification
FOR BOTH A AND B : Persons having a Degree in any subject or a minimum two-year Diploma in any Engineering Disciplines after passing Higher Secondary Examination are eligible for this course.

FOR COURSE D : 3 years Diploma holder in any discipline of Engineering or a Graduate with Science or Maths as one of the subjects in Intermediate/ +2 of SSC. Science Graduate or a Serving Railway Employees with 5 years experience in Railways and having High School / SSC or equivalent qualification or having similar education/technical qualification as stated above for non-railway persons, may also apply.

FOR COURSE E : Degree in any discipline from a recognised University.
