There are scholarships available for International students from various New Zealand universities.  The most important ones are listed below:

1.  MFAT NZODA Postgraduate Scholarships
2. University of Auckland International Doctoral Scholarship
3. University of Canterbury Doctoral and Master's Scholarships
Types of Scholarships
Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) the New Zealand government offers the following scholarships to students from some developing countries (including India).
MFAT NZODA Postgraduate Scholarships
The New Zealand Government offers scholarships for postgraduate study to international students from selected developing countries to study in New Zealand as part of its overseas development assistance programme. The objective of the scholarships is to promote human resource development and thereby contribute to economic and social progress in developing countries through the transfer of knowledge and skills. It is expected that holders of these scholarships will return to their own country with enhanced skills that will enable them to contribute more effectively to the development of their country.

Only citizens of certain countries (including India) are eligible. Also the guidelines of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicate that students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and those who are indigenous people of their country may be given preference. In awarding scholarships the Ministry seeks to maintain a balance between men and women students. The scholarship is intended to cover tuition fees, course related fees, international economy travel, establishment and living allowances.

The administration of the NZODA Postgraduate Scholarships is carried out by New Zealand Universities. Students who believe that they qualify, should apply to the Universities for admission to a postgraduate programme. If they are granted admission to a postgraduate programme, they may then apply to the University for an NZODA Postgraduate Scholarship. The University will assess the students on their academic merit as well as the developmental relevance of their proposed course of studies. If the University considers that the student meets the criteria of selection, the University will nominate the student for a scholarship to the New Zealand Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. If the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade accepts the nomination the University will notify the successful student who will be in a position to accept or decline the scholarship.

Scholarship applications have to be accompanied by a one or two page rationale for the students' selection. This should describe the kind of work they are engaged in and the relevance of that work to the development of their country. The applicants should also outline the topic they are interested in studying and give an explanation of the value of their proposed course of study to the development of their country. If possible applicants should also attach a letter to their application from their employer. Two references are also required.

Currently the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade holds two scholarship rounds per year, the first in March and the second in September. Prospective applicants should ensure that their applications are submitted to the University by 31 January for the March round and by 31 July for the September round.

This scholarship applies only to those students who hold a recognised undergraduate degree.

The NZODA Postgraduate Scholarships provide opportunities to students from selected developing countries to study in New Zealand in areas of developmental relevance to their country. The Scholarships are very competitive and only students with excellent grades should apply.

The Scholarships cover :

   1. Fees
   2. Textbooks
   3. Research Costs
   4. Return Travel
   5. An Establishment Grant
   6. Living Allowance
   7. An allowance and one way airfare is also paid for dependents if the programme of study is        longer than 18 months.

University of Canterbury Doctoral and Master's Scholarships
Scholarships are offered annually for study towards a Ph.D. degree (Doctoral) or for the thesis year of a Masters degree (Masters). Competition for these scholarships is very keen and applicants must have gained a first class honours degree or the equivalent. International students who meet this criterion and who have been granted admission ad eundem to a Ph.D. or Masters degree by thesis at this university are eligible to apply.

The value of the Doctoral Scholarships is $12,000 per annum, paid monthly. This should be adequate to meet the living expenses of a single student but international students will still require sufficient additional funds to pay the tuition fees at the beginning of each year. The value of the Masters scholarship is $5,000 per annum, also paid monthly.

Application forms are available from the Scholarships Section, Registry, University of Canterbury, in August, and applications close on 15 October for study in the next year.
Information for Applicants
We the scholarships offered by the University of Canterbury that you, as an international student, are eligible to apply for. Some important general points are outlined below:

    1. Admission ad eundem statum should be organised before applying for scholarships. Please         contact the Admissions Officer (Mr. Jonathan Carson) if you have not already done so.

    2. If you are not a New Zealand citizen, or permanent resident, you will be required to pay        full fees. Where fees are awarded as part of a scholarship, these are at the New Zealand        domestic rate. A substantial amount of additional funding is required in order to meet        international tuition costs.

    3. Competition for the awards detailed in this brochure is very keen and most have a minimum        standard of academic achievement. For the University of Canterbury Masters and Doctoral        Scholarships, for example, awards have been made in the past to persons possessing a        First Class Honours degree (or equivalent) with at least an overall "A" grade in their final        year.

    4. The University of Canterbury does not provide financial assistance to undergraduate          international students.

    5.  Application forms for scholarships listed are available approximately two months before the         published closing dates. Please write, fax, or e-mail requesting these in plenty of time to         meet application deadlines. It is a policy of the University not to accept late applications.         Application forms and copies of the regulations are available from:
