It goes without saying that India has a rich cultural and historical heritage – and the phrase 'unity in diversity' may be trite but true in the Indian context. The variety can be observed not just in its food and lifestyle, its tradition and culture, but also in the architecture of its holy places.
From the Himalayan heights in the North, to Cape Comorin in the South , India is suffused with places of worship. Many theories have been propounded to explain the existence of such a large number of temples, which include giving a concrete place to God in the 'Indian scheme of things', to pave the way for attaining moksha (salvation).
