Perched on a 15 km long horseshoe-shaped ridge with the grand Himalayas as a backdrop is the colonial hill resort of Mussoorie in Uttaranchal. This is one of the most popular hill stations of the north, all the more so because of its easy accessibility from Dehradun. Mussoorie is an excellent respite for tourists and people who want relief from the hot sultry conditions of the plains. Nature has gifted Mussoorie everything which makes a place beautiful. With the onset of summers tourists start coming here.

As heat increases in the plains number of tourist inflow also increases proportionately. Mussoorie is very close to Delhi, its overnight journey and one can return in one day . So, some people come here to spend their week ends. Also, the major Hindu pilgrimages like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Haridwar, Rishikesh are not far from this place.


Prime Attractions of Mussoorie


Kempty Falls
Kempty Falls, located 15 kms from Mussoorie are the biggest attraction of the place. With water cascading down from an altitude of 4,500 feet and splitting further into five cascades, Kempty Falls offers a panoramic view.

Gun Hill Trekking
Gunhill is the second highest point in Mussoorie. To access Gunhill, there are two ways. The first one is to begin trek from court complex on the Mall road. This path takes you to Gunhill in about 20 minutes.

Hanol Mela
The temple of Hanol in Chakrata, 78 km. from Mussoorie is the venue of this exotic fair called as the Hanol Mela.

Kempty Trekking
Kempty Falls is located 13 kms from Mussoorie. This place was developed as a tourist destination by John Mekinan after 1835.

Lal Tibba
This place is highest point in Mussoorie. Lal Tibba is located in Landhour area which is the oldest inhabited place in Mussoorie.


Getting to mussoorie

Mussoorie is 34 kms from Dehradun, which is 250 km from Delhi (5 hours by road). The best way to get here is by car from Dehradun (30 to 45 minutes). The nearest rail station for Mussoorie is at Dehradun. There are regular buses and shared taxis from Dehradun, coming in to the Library Bus Stand.

Best time to visit

The peak tourist season is in summer from May till July. But the town tends to get overcrowded at this time and mid-season, around October- November, are great for a visit. Bring woolens, rain protection and walking shoes.
