Dhaka to hand over ULFA leader

Dhaka : The 16-month old process of bartering peace with dreaded terror outfit ULFA hitting a roadblock because of this man’s absence from the negotiation table, Anup Chetia, United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) General Secretary, arrested and lodged in a Bangladeshi prison since 1997 on charges of forged credentials and possession of illegal arms. A man wanted by the Assam Police for various terror charges but wanted more desperately by the Government of India.

But Bangladeshi Government’s offer coming with a rider, the jailed ULFA leader’s return to India posing technical snags, since his arrest in 1997, the Indian Government making a strong case for his extradition but turned down Bangladesh on the ground that the two countries do not have an extradition treaty. But after the Bangladeshi Government’s fresh assurance and apparent resolve against terrorism, India is hopeful that the Sheikh Hasina Government will finally accede to their request.
