Assam MLA says mob tried to rape her; five held

New Delhi: A day after Assam police said that Rumi Nath and her second husband Jaki Jakir were beaten up by a mob, the Congress MLA on Sunday alleged that the attackers even attempted to rape her.

Rumi Nath married Jaki Jakir without divorcing her first husband. The duo were at Karimganj town in Assam when a mob of more than 200 people surrounded her.

Speaking with mediapersons, Rumi, who was badly bruised, said: "The attackers misbehaved with me. They even tried to rape and kill me."

"I believe it was a political conspiracy," she added. "I don't know these people, these guys. I have nothing to do with them. So why have they done it? I want to know the reason actually because I have never faced it. I have never seen them. I want to know why they have been used like this," she said.

In the meantime, the Assam Police on Sunday held five men in connection with the case.

Rumi, representing Borkhola Assembly constituency in Barak Valley, had created a furore by announcing her marriage with Jakir without divorcing her first husband.

Her first husband Rakesh Singh, with whom she has a two-year-old daughter, had filed an FIR that his wife was missing last month.

Rumi Nath was first elected to the Assembly in 2006 on a BJP ticket from Borkhola constituency and later defected to the Congress and won the seat a second time in the 2011 elections.
