Kokrajhar : Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Monday assured security and help to people lodged in a relief camp in Kokrajhar, Assam to help them return home.

Interacting with people at Titaguri Gigh School in Kokrajhar, Chidambaram told the inmates that the government of India would not leave them on their own. He said the government would provide houses to those who lost it in the violence.

Chidambaram arrived on a two-day visit to the violence-affected areas in Assam to take stock of the situation as well as to talk to those affected. After arriving at Guwahati airport around 8.30 on Monday morning, Chidambaram went straight to Kokrajhar where he visited relief camps and a violence?ravaged village, an official source said.

Union Development of North Eastern Region Paban Singh Ghatowar, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief executive member Hagrama Mohilary, Assam's Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka accompanied the Union home minister during his visit to the relief camp.

The home minister after reviewing the situation in the BTC area will come back to Guwahati on Monday night and will go to visit violence-hit Dhubri district on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the situation in violence-affected Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Dhubri districts has gradually improved and curfew during the day has been lifted. The death toll of the violence has gone up to 58 with recovery of five more bodies. About four lakh people are lodged in 278 relief camps spread all over four affected districts.
