Ahmedabad : The flood situation in four central Gujarat districts, where alert was sounded last night, became grim today due to continuous release of water from Kadana dam even as the administration evacuated 14,400 people from the region, officials said.
The inflow of water into the river Mahi following heavy rains in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh has resluted in release of eight lakh cuesecs of water from Kadana dam located in Panchmahals district this morning, control room officials said. Panchmahals, Kheda, Anand and Vadodara districts have been affected following the water discharge, they said.
More than 7,800 people were evacuated from Panchmahals district as 30 villages along the river banks are affected by the swelling of the river, said District Collector Dinesh Bhrambhatt. Rescue teams of State Reserve Police (SRP) and Disaster Management Force are in the district for relief and resuce operation.
In Anand, the administration has evacuated more than 6,600 people from low-lying areas along the river Mahi, district officials said. Meanwhile, the inflow of water in river Narmada has also increased due to rains in Madhya Pradesh.
The water inflow at the Sardar Sarovar Dam is around six lakh cuesec while the outflow is 5.61 lakh cuesec, control room officials said. PTI
