Sonia to address farmers' rally today

Maharashtra : In a bid to launch the party campaign for the upcoming local body polls, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi is to visit Maharashtra today and will address a farmer's rally at Latur in Marathwada region in Maharashtra.

Day before the Congress-led Democratic Front government in Maharashtra completes two years in office, party President Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to address a farmers' rally in Maharashtra today. This is the last day for filing nominations for Municipal Council elections in the state.

The AICC has already announced that Gandhi would be addressing five rallies in different parts of the state, in the next few months, which would witness polls to several zilla parishads, municipal councils and municipal corporations.

Her son and party MP Rahul Gandhi has also been invited for the rally at Chakur but his final schedule is still awaited as he was out of the country, a state Congress leader told in Latur (Maharashtra).

"We will be able to tell by tonight whether Rahul is coming or not," he said. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Pradip Rathi, also the rally's convenor, said some three lakh party workers and farmers are expected to attend the rally.

Latur in central Maharashtra is the home turf of Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who will also be present.

Latur district Congress chief Tryambakdas Zhanvar said people from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh would also join the rally, being organised in the backdrop of continuing suicides by bankrupt farmers in the Vidarbha region.

After her arrival, Gandhi is scheduled to first address a party workers' convention, Rathi said.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, state Congress chief Prabha Rau, party general secretary for Maharashtra, Margaret Alva, and several state ministers will attend both events, he said.
